Movie Review: I Am Legend

Rating: 4 stars

With all the advertising blitz, it's impossible to have missed Will Smith's newest flick I Am Legend, that is unless you live under a rock. The movie features Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith) who is presumably the only survivor of a virus, originally meant to cure cancer, that killed most of the world's population and turned the rest into flesh-eating zombie-like creatures. He lives with his dog, continuously trying to develop a cure in underground lab and fighting off zombies.

Now I gotta say, Will Smith`s acting is top notch in this movie. His portrayal of a lonely human being, trying to keep himself sane throughout years of solitude is admirable. It is along the lines of Tom Hanks`s performance in Castaway, but with a much higher sense of urgency and danger. Without spoiling any of the plot, there is one particular scene with his dog that quintessentially describes all of this. One thing, that perhaps as a car-lover I noticed, is the Ford product placement in this movie is everywhere, though I really didn`t mind the sleek red Shelby GT500. Also something that was pointed out to me by others in the theater was that they felt the ending could have used some work. Personally, I don`t see any other way it could have ended (well) and that it worked. Well worth watching, especially in a time where Hollywood is churning out way too much crap. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
